IoT or Internet of Things is a network which connects the physical device with the software platform along with some sensors and actuators. AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT gives the birth of a seamless physical and digital connectivity. Hence, a smart, digitized, well-managed network makes sense in future life-style. So, this article is all about AI and IoT in public safety and security.

What comes into your mind when you hear the term “Intelligent thing” or a “smart thing”? Well, you see a picture of well-managed, connected blocks right? Isn’t it be cool enough to see your safety and security also become smart and intelligent? So, IoT when meets with AI it becomes possible.

Now, here we go with the safety blocks made by combined AI and IoT:

Crowd Monitoring

Basically, monitoring every individual in a large crowd like busy streets, shopping areas, railways, metro stations and airport is impossible for the human being. So, for any potential security, it is an important part of maintaining public safety. Therefore, identifying a person who may be carrying explosives or weapons can be a hassle. However, by using different kinds of IoT sensors, the security personnel of a smart city can be changed. For instance, suspicious objects made of certain material and certain shape can be detected by scanning. This scanned footage can be analyzed by the AI algorithm in real-time and it can be confirmed that those objects are harmful or not. If it detects any kind of such objects then the personnel can be sent for further examination.

In addition, IoT and AI-based crowd monitoring system can also track the footfall in places like footbridges. It may send an alert if the condition of overloading arises to ensure the safety of the people.

Video Analytics

The traditional video analytic devices supports the surveillance camera used to detect and analyze the previously committed crimes. The systems was there but one responsible personnel have to monitor it all the time in all places of a particular area. But it is impossible for a man to monitor all the streets’ activities all the time. So, to overcome this kind of issues video analytics devices using AI and IoT have come into the picture. It can analyze real-time footage by deep learning-driven AI. Moreover, It can also indicate the violence and notify nearby personnel immediately. This may lead to a quick reaction in a crime or the prevention of criminal acts.

Robotic Patrol & Security Drones

Basically with the help of cutting edge sensors and detector cameras the robotic security personnel can patrol the streets of the smart cities and potential threats. Likewise, they can prevent foreboding crimes and can generate basic security features like crowd control and search operations. Like human security officers, drone deploys, monitors public places, and notify nearby personnel if there is any potential threats to public safety but those dedicated drones are much more efficient than the human security officers. However, it is important to realize that adopting technologies (AI and IoT) and entrusting our safety and security completely on them can be a threat as there are so many things that our officers can only do. So, until we have such capabilities in our machines to perform such tasks these all should remain as a security strategy.

Access Control

Basically, physical and cybersecurity threats are increasing nowadays and companies are struggling to overcome all the threats and manage to keep all the physical and digital credentials confidential. Firstly, these security systems ensure that only the authorized personnel can enter with the authentic key. In high-security areas like airports, banks, government data centres, military bases, power plants AI and IoT based access control have to be implemented. Biometric sensors are used in such multi-factor authentication in order to add extra layers in high security which includes biometric scanning. Fingerprint solution will deliver higher matching speed, better image capture quality and efficient performance.

Likewise, the RFID-based ticket system can also make your journey in transportation more safer. Also, the checking process can be made more secure and easily scannable in a large crowd. Likewise, the digital tickets which store in the smartphones can be reliable and robust and efficient instead of manual guarding. This will give the effective use of security. In fact, RFID-based smart and secure 3 million tickets were used for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Future transit

In order to protect travellers from crime, terrorism and any mitigate risk transport system should adopt AI and IoT to increase their performance, resilience and scalability. Likewise, in the time of travelling to improve traveller experience and to ensure their safety and security the technology has been adopted.

HCI (Hyperconverged Infrastructure) is a platform that allows for the IoT data collection, consolidation management, video storage and data analytics, access control, and other related applications. Moreover, it is a simply deployable, easily manageable and industry-standard application. It provides a seamless way to scale the infrastructure as a camera or sensor and counts grow, increase in analytics demands. In addition, it eliminates separate physical servers and storage.

Facial Recognition

Basically, facial recognition eliminates a technology by which it identifies the human face. A facial recognition system uses biometrics to map the facial features from the loaded photograph or video, compare it with the database of known faces to find a match. So, it works on three steps; first face detection, face capture and face match. Identification and authentication process of the device sometimes ask the questions like “who are you?” “Are you really one that you are telling?”. It can help to identify personnel but a serious threat to the privacy issue. However, the facial biometrics was developed by Apple and is heavily used by China as it is difficult to differentiate the faces of Chinese. Here are some popular facial recognition technologies:

It makes up the analysed IoT which contextualised by AI technologies and presented to users in a more meaningful and useful way. Including data scientists and machine learning tools Internet of Things is getting closer to become a mainstream phenomenon. The ultra-fast and ultra low latency connectivity of 5G networks enable new transformational capabilities in virtually every industry sector, potentially changing our society and the way we live and work.
