Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) – An Analysis

by Oct 30, 2020Articles

IIoT stands for the Industrial Internet of Things or Industrial IoT. In this the large number of industrial devices are connected together in synchronization. For the synchronization of devices it uses the software tools. In short, the devices connected can communicate with each other over cloud platform and can perform process accordingly.

What exactly IIoT means?

The industrial internet of things is the use of smart sensors and actuators to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes. The Industrial Internet of Things , also known as the Industrial Internet, brings together brilliant machines, advanced analytics, and people at work.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), also known as the Industrial Internet, makes intelligent machines, advanced analytics and people to work together and contribute to the business bottom line. The combination of trios results in systems that can monitor, collect, exchange, analyze, and deliver valuable new insights like never before. The comprehensive digitization also makes it easier to conclude actionable insights.

How IIoT works ?

The IIoT is important because of its potential to enable faster and better decision making. IIoT can bring the huge changes in almost all of the industrial processes.

It is a network of intelligent devices connected to form systems that monitor, collect, exchange and analyze data. Each industrial IoT ecosystem consists of:

  • Intelligent assets that can sense, communicate and store information about themselves;
  • Public and/or private data communications infrastructure
  • Analytics and applications that generate business information from raw data and People.

Information can directly transmitted to the data communications infrastructure with the help of Edge devices  and intelligent assets. This information used to control or operate any certain machinery. It is useful in both, Batch processes as well as continues processes. But it beneficial in batch processes as we don’t need any manpower.

If we are going to summarize it, then it is just a simple process. I will summarize it point by point,

In manufacturing company, we have to always keep an eye on the machine to ensure whether it is performing well or not. Also the we have to make changes in the process according to our product. Now we are using IIoT, then we don’t have to do all of this. We can monitor and control the process from control room. Also we can get all process data over our screen. We can see our process visualization on screen using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).

Now a days, the term Digital Manufacturing is in the trend, IIoT is the fundamental of Digital Manufacturing.

Benefits of IIoT

One of the top touted benefits the industrial internet of things affords businesses is predictive maintenance. Organizations can use real-time data generated from IIoT systems to predict defects in machinery, for example, before they occur, enabling companies to take action to address those issues before a part fails or a machine goes down.

IIoT technologies help field service technicians identify potential issues in customer equipment before they become major issues, enabling techs to fix the problems before they inconvenience customers.

Asset tracking is another IIoT perk. Suppliers, manufacturers and customers can use asset management systems to track the location, status and condition of products throughout the supply chain.

IIoT also enables enhanced customer satisfaction. IIoT also improves facility management. Manufacturing equipment is susceptible to wear and tear, which can be exacerbated by certain conditions within a factory. Sensors can monitor vibrations, temperature and other factors that might lead to operating conditions that are less than optimal.

Benefits of IIoT in Manufacturing

One of the greatest benefits of Industrial Internet of Things has to be seen in the reduction of human errors and manual labor, the increase in overall efficiency and the reduction of costs, both in terms of time and money. We also cannot forget the possible underpinnings of IIoT in quality control and maintenance.

The Industrial Internet of Things is part of the Internet of Things.  Internet of Things or IoT is data-rich: large amounts of data get collected, aggregated and shared in a meaningful way. Here again the goal is to increase the automation level at domestic and commercial levels. In the Industrial Internet of Things, data is crucial as well and this causes a change in the human tasks in an Industry 4.0 context whereby automation leads to a decrease of specific types of work but at the same time requires new skillsets. The goal of the Industrial Internet of Things is also not to fully replace human work, its goal is to enhance and optimize it by, for example, creating new revenue streams and business models with a big role for data analysis.

To summarize, here are some of the key benefits of IIoT in an industry context

  • Improved and intelligent connectivity between devices or machines
  • Increased efficiency
  • Cost savings and
  • Time savings
  • Enhanced industrial safety

Future of IIoT

The future of IIoT will include more emphasis on predictive maintenance, enhanced device communication, and more affordable access for companies of all sizes to tap into the business benefits of the connected facility. Among those benefits are productivity gains, cost savings, immediate control, and quick detection of issues and opportunities.
