10 Major Differences Between M2M and IoT

by Apr 28, 2020Articles

INTRODUCTION

In this articlewe are going to see the major difference between M2M and Iot.M2M, or machine-to-machine is direct communication between devices using wired or wireless communication channels. M2M refers to the interaction of two or more devices and machines that are connected to each other. These devices capture data and share with other connected devices, creating an intelligent network of things or systems.

The Internet of Thing is the network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software, and electronics, enabling these devices to communicate with each other and exchange data over a computer network. The things in the IoT refer to hardware devices uniquely identifiable through a network platform within the Internet infrastructure.

DefinitionM2M is a concept where two or more machines can communicate with each other and conduct certain functions without human intervention. Some degree of intelligence can be observed in the M2M model.IoT is an ecosystem of connected devices (via the internet) where the devices can collect and transfer data over a network automatically without human intervention. IoT helps to interact with the internal and external environment which in turn control the decision-making

ARCHITECTURE OF M2M

APPLICATION of M2M

1. MANUFACTURING

Every manufacturing environment—whether it is food processing or general product manufacturing—relies on technology to ensure costs are managed properly and processes are executed efficiently. Automating manufacturing processes within such a fast-paced environment is expected to improve processes even more.

For example, M2M tools allow business owners to be alerted on their smartphones when an important piece of equipment needs service, so they can address issues as quickly as they arise.

that track a frail or elderly person’s normal movements can detect when he or she has had a fall and alert a healthcare worker to the situation.

2. HOME APPLIANCES

IoT already affects home appliance connectivity through platforms like Nest. However, M2M is expected to take a home-based IoT to the next level. Manufacturers like LG and Samsung are already slowly unveiling smart home appliances to help ensure a higher quality of life for occupants.

For example, an M2M-capable washing machine could send alerts to the owners’ smart devices once it finishes washing or drying, and a smart refrigerator could automatically order groceries from Amazon once its inventory is depleted.

3. HEALTHCARE DEVICE MANAGEMENT

One of the biggest opportunities for M2M technology is in the realm of health care. With M2M technology, hospitals can automate processes to ensure the highest levels of treatment. Using devices that can react faster than a human healthcare professional in an emergency situation makes this possible. For instance, when a patient’s vital signs drop below normal, an M2M-connected life support device could automatically administer oxygen and additional care until a healthcare professional arrives on the scene.

APPLICATION OF IoT

1.SMART HOME

Smart homes are most trendy among these applications. The vision of a smart home is to control home appliances including lights, water flow from taps home security and safety.

The house owner gets access to control and monitor these actions from their smart devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops). Imagine a situation that you forgot to turn off a water tap, you are already out of your home. You can just turn off from your phone.

Smart homes allow you to manage all your home devices from one place. One can also use a security camera under the IoT facility to avoid thefts and robbery.

2. IoT IN FARMING

Farmers can use intelligent IoT farming applications to optimize many distinct operations, such as determining the best time to harvest crops, generating soil chemistry-based fertilizer profiles, and detecting soil nutrients and moisture concentrations.

A series of sensors should be installed throughout the agriculture, sensors connected to animals can help control livestock.

Smart Elements, AllMETOE, and Pynco are some examples of farming IoT devices. These devices are capable of detecting the weather and other environmental data. The smart farming concept can revolutionize the farming industry.

3. HEALTH AND FITNESS

To help you stay fit, IoT-connected devices are here. Fitness trackers help you track your daily activities such as sleeping patterns, heart rate, patterns of activity, statistics of workouts, calories burned, etc.

It is now possible to place sensors on clothing and monitor some signals. This sensor collects data through skin contact and transmits information to smartphones and remote diagnostic devices.

An example is clothing that detects a person’s stress level by monitoring their perspiration. Another example is a “tattoo” sensor, which can be removed after use or that can be absorbed by the body. Check this to know more https://iot4beginners.com/applications-of-internet-of-things-in-healthcare/
